Grand Canyon South Rim Panorama

Nature has a beauty that refreshes our souls and keeps calling us back. Our National Parks are exceptional locations that have been set aside for us and future generations to spend time in. This year I will be spending teaching in both the Smoky Mountains and Zion national parks. Elegant River Compositions in the Smoky Mountains

Along the rivers and streams in the Smoky Mountains there are elegant compositions everywhere. This simple scene with the water flowing around the two rocks had a nice flow leading you into the picture from the top left across the image to the center right and then back down to the bottom left. It is not you traditional rule of thirds image but it works for me.

Clingman’s Dome, Wait for the magic!!

Often when I am out shooting I talk to other photographers as I wait for the light and on a rainy overcast day I am often the last person to leave the location. On a shooting trip 25 years ago to the Dolomites in Northern Italy the mountains were socked in and I decides to call it a night and went back to the lodge where I was staying. As I was eating my meal and looking out the window at the mountains the clouds parted and the most wonderful light hit the top of the mountains. That is when I made myself a promise never to leave until 15 min after the sun has set. I always wait for the magic to happen and I am seldom disappointed.

Some of my favorite shots are on overcast days when a break in the clouds can give you dramatic effects.

Charleston spring location workshop March 29 – April 2

On cold winter nights like this I find my thoughts wandering to the warm shooting locations that I have planned for this spring. In late March and early April Charleston emerges from its winter sleep and explodes in vibrant color. Hope you are able to join me Charleston for early an early spring location shoot in some of Americas best gardens.

Casting Shadows – Venice Carnival

Carnival in Venice starts today and as a photographer I can’t stop thinking that I should be there to capture and share the wonderful images of the costumed characters.

Cast Your Shadow - Venice Carnival

Cast Your Shadow – Venice Carnival

The soft  light at sunrise for this image was wonderful and the shadows of the costumed character along with the shadows of the columns and archway make this one of my favorite images from Carnival.

The image out of the camera was great but I did used Topaz Clarity to boost the color and contrast in this image.

Venice Carnival image processed with Topaz Labs Adjust 5

This has been an exciting week for me. I have become an affiliate for Topaz Labs who produces elegant Photoshop Plug-ins. I was able to get the effect I wanted on this image from Carnival in Venice using the Adjust 5 software which is the workhorse for Topaz Labs Photoshop Bundle.

Venice Photographic Workshop – Burano Lights – Venetian Lagoon

Burano Lights – Venetian Lagoon

Night Image of Burano Island Italy

Night Image of Burano Island Italy

During the workshops I give in Venice, I usually visit Burano one of the islands in the Northern Venetian Lagoon. Burano is 45 minute Vaporetto Ride from Venice. the Vaporetto Ride itself is an experience, it’s great to see Venice from the sea.

Burano is known for its lace and its gorgeous colored buildings and home. Around 3000 residents live on the island, in houses that are painted in all the colors of a rainbow. I would highly recommend visiting Burano, you can wander the streets and take photos of this beautifully colorful fishing town, where women stayed home making lace, while the fishermen went out to the sea to fish. Each fisherman was able to recognize their house from afar Because every house was painted in a different color of the rainbow.

1-I opened several raw images and after checking for motion blur and I selected Raw image 4032 CR2 to work with.

 Sepia Lovers – Venice Carnival

Sepia Lovers - Venice Carnival

Sepia Lovers - Venice Carnival

Venice Carnival was first started in the 1300′s as a celebration leading up to Lent where nobles and commoners mingled freely while disguised by there masks. Today’s Carnival carries on the tradition where wonderful costumed characters mingle in complete anonymity. For the costumed characters who attend Carnival it must be a wonderful experience to have a few days of anonymity in a world where everyone knows to much about everyone with just a click of a button.

During the workshop I stayed in a lovely Pensione by the Academia bridge. The single room rate ran a little under a $100. It had it’s own semi private piazza where you could  have your breakfasts outdoor on nice days after the morning shoots. For the carnival workshop some of the clients stayed at the Regina & Europa which is a 5 star on the grand canal a 5 min walk from my Pensione.

With this Image I did very little work to the image in Adobe Camera Raw. The only adjustment I made was in Camera Calibration where I selected Camera Neutral.

Gondolas - Piazza San Marco

The rich colorful palette of Venice with its canals, bridges and the amazing architecture of San Marco Piazza and the Rialto bridge provide some of my favorite compositions to photograph. This February during historic Carnival I will be taking a small group to capture the architectural images as well as a the historic costumes of Carnival. The Colors of the and medieval architecture that Venice provides for our backdrops will give you breathtaking images, some of the best images you will ever capture. This Island City is a great time to shoot through the year. Capturing images during Carnival when residents and visitors compete with each other for the most authentic and sometimes the most outrageous costumes is a must for every photographer.
