Big Sable Lighthouse – Aug 14-17

Big Sable Lighthouse is one of our country’s best kept lighthouses and a gem along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

HDR Pano Big Sable Lighthouse

HDR Pano Big Sable Lighthouse

This image was shot a few hours after sunrise. To preserve the highlights and shadows I merged three separate exposures to create HDR files. To create this panoramic, I merged 2 HDR images. The HDR and Panoramic files were created in Lightroom.

As a Michigan resident and photographer, I am grateful for the hard work put in by the members of Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association to restore and maintain Big Sable, Ludington North Breakwater, Little Sable, and White River Lighthouses. Visit their website www.splka.org and take the time to explore their organization and lighthouses on the east coast of Lake Michigan.

Hope you can join me this summer to photograph some of these wonderful lighthouses.

Charleston Church Steeples – April 3 – April 7, 2016

This beautiful city is known as the “Holy City” because of the abundance of churches on the city skyline. As they approached Charleston from the sea, the colonial sailors could see 20 church steeples. Charleston boasts over 400 places of worship of many different denominations throughout the city, religion is deeply embedded in this city’s rich culture.

This Steepled church in the historic Battery Park section of Charleston is one of my favorite to take clients to during the blue light hour.

Azalea Pathway – Charleston Spring Workshop

The enthusiasm of the clients who travel with me always recharges me and I am looking forward to spending time in the field with everyone this year.

Last night Marius Strumyla sent me a few of the images he captured the day after the Charleston workshop ended. I thought this Azalea pathway was exceptional.

Evening’s Stillness – Charleston, SC

When talking with clients at the art fairs I am asked what time of day do I usually capture my images. Early mornings and evening’s are usually the best shooting conditions which surprised most people.

Ambient light is softer at sunrise and sunset and gives me a more consistent exposure through the whole image than images shot when the sun is higher. There is usually stillness in the airs movement and everything stops moving. The leaves and flowers stop fluttering and Lakes Rivers and ponds can become mirrors. This is my favorite time of each day and when I usually capture my best images.

This mirrored lake in Charleston is perfectly still at sunset and gave me this beautiful mirror image. It was a great way to start the Charleston workshop this year.

Selective focus of Charleston’s Wisteria

When Spring comes to Charleston the wisteria brings wonderful splashes of purple to the landscape. With this image I wanted to use the selective focus technique to sharply focus on the wisteria and leaves in the foreground while leaving the background soft and out-of-focus. To capture this image I focused halfway into the wisteria trying a variety of f stops  and found that F/13 worked the best keeping the foreground in sharp focus while giving the background a dreamy soft look.

Botany Bay

A few days ago I was able to spend a little time on this wonderful stretch of beach in South Carolina enjoying the sunrise with clients. What a great way to spend time during the Easter and Passover holidays.
