Resting Place – Charleston workshop

Charleston is a city rich in history, tradition, Southern charm and beauty. The Battery Park area is one of the oldest communities in the U.S. and offers a wide range of photographic opportunities. We will be spending time photographing gardens, reflection ponds and cypress swamps. Angel Oak, a 1500 year old Live Oak, is the oldest living tree east of the Rockies and is one of the locations we will be visiting during the workshop. Our field time will be spent on composition and proper use of light. We will spend some time processing images using Lightroom, Topaz and Nik Software to help you with your processing skills. Our goal is to teach you how to capture beautiful images and explore how to create the images that continue to inspire.

Our time will be split between Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. Breathtaking Zion Canyon is the centerpiece of this 147,000-acre parkland that protects a spectacular landscape of high plateaus, sheer canyons, and monolithic cliffs. Their sculptured sandstone walls shaped by water and wind over thousands of years provide photographers the Southwest’s most sought-after photographic images. In the fall, when the sun is lower in the sky, muted red and purple tones take your breath away. These canyons are unlike any place in the world. The workshop ends on the 13th after a morning shoot and final critique session over breakfast.

In the fall, slender shafts of light penetrate these narrow canyons and bounce soft light off the rock walls casting wonderful muted colors against the sandstone walls. In this workshop you will learn how to capture these images while improving your composition and technical skills.

After shooting Upper antelope canyon we will drive to Moab to capture images in Canyonlands, Arches and Dead Horse Point. From Moab we head south to Monument Valley (Navajo: Ts’ Bii’ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) this is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft above the valley floor. Director John Ford used Monument Valley for a number of his best-known films defining what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.

Workshop Overview

Workshops capture landscape images that excite and move, images that trace where the mind has been and forms a unique vision to last a lifetime. Students learn to apply new skills daily in a supportive environment where we share our collective knowledge to take the next step. We hold a deep passion for the places we travel, and explore images that continue to inspire. What takes time to create, time respects, good images don’t just happen. Most often, our best images lie around the next turn, waiting for us to find. Our philosophy understands that through photography and an open mind, the world is ever ready to delight.
